Daily Devotion For Feb. 28th

Our Blessings
Read Ezekiel 16:9-14; Ephesians 3:14-21

All shall give as they are able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.
-Deuteronomy 16:17 (NRSV)
EACH day during Lent I put aside coins in a jar as a reminder of God's blessings. A Christian charity made suggestions for each day: "Give a coin for every pair of shoes that you own." I counted eight pairs, and then I thought about the many children who have to go barefoot. Another day I gave some money for each meal I'd eaten that day, as a reminder that many go hungry and die of starvation. Jesus had nowhere to lay his head (see Matt. 8:20), so another day I counted the number of beds in my home and gave an amount for each one. I have so much to be thankful for: clean water, food, clothes, shelter, work, electricity, gas, peace, freedom.
Jesus identified with those who had little. After all, as a toddler he was a refugee. As an adult he had no home of his own; he was rejected in his hometown and eventually died on the city's rubbish dump. He ministered to all sorts of people, but he had a particular concern for people who were poor.
How much am I willing to give? At the end of Lent I'll add up all the money I've collected and send it to the charity. But it will be a tiny sum compared to all that God has given me.
Pam Pointer (Wiltshire, England)

Generous God, may we never take for granted all that you give us - most of all the gift of your son, Christ Jesus. Help us to respond with joyful gratitude. Amen.

Thought for the Day
Count your blessings and give accordingly.

Daily Devotion for Feb. 27th

God's Right Here"
Read Psalm 46:1-7

Because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts.
-Galatians 4:6 (NRSV)
MY younger brother, Alan, had Down syndrome and died four months short of his 50th birthday. He was terrified of thunderstorms. Our mom taught Alan that when a storm approached, he should put his hand over his heart and say, "God's right here." After Mom died, Alan stayed overnight with my family once a week. When a storm was near, Alan would come to us and say, "God's right here." Then he would calm down. Later, when the storm passed, he would come to us and say, "Alan's all right."
What a wonderful picture of faith Alan gave us! When the storms of life threaten, we can follow Alan's example and remember that "God's right here" - right here in our heart, every single day of our lives. And if we believe that as strongly as Alan did, we, too, will be able to say, "I'm all right," even in fearsome times.
Steve D. Davis (Georgia, USA)

Heavenly Father, help us to remember that you are here with us and that we should have no fear. Help us to trust in you when the storms of life come our way. Amen.
Because
Thought for the day
"God's right here," we'll be "all right."

Daily Devotion for Feb. 26th

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
-1 John 4:78 (NIV)
AFTER a mediocre football season, I heard a quarterback say about his team, "We are better than our record." I thought about how that phrase applies to my life.
I realized that if God looked only at my record, God would see the hurtful things I said, the wrong decisions I made, and the sins I committed. I would be condemned. However, "God is love" and doesn't keep a ledger of my performance.
It comforts me to know that God loves me and sent Jesus into the world to die and to be raised for me. As we believe in Jesus Christ and repent of our wrongdoing, God forgives us and transforms us into something better than our record. We become heirs to all God's blessings.
Kenneth Decker (Kentucky, USA)

God, thank you for giving us a savior, Jesus Christ, and for loving us in spite of our transgressions. As Jesus taught us we pray, "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."*
Thought for the Day.
In God's eyes, each one of us is better than our record.

Daily Devotion for Feb. 24th 2009

Where Am I Headed?
Read Psalm 16:8-11

The psalmist wrote, "You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy."
-Psalm 16:11 (NRSV)
HAVE you ever been driving down the road automatically - listening to the radio or letting your mind wander - only to discover as you reached a corner, "Oh, no! I'm not supposed to go to work. I'm going to _____________" (some other place). Most of us have. We get used to getting in the car and heading toward our usual destination. At some point, we realize we're not heading where we want to go. Habit has taken over.
For me, Lent is like that corner where I realize I'm not heading in the right direction. My life has been buzzing along, taking its ordinary path. Suddenly it's Lent. It's time to stop, think about where I'm heading, and decide if that is where I really want to go. In the six weeks between now and Easter I have time to take stock, to ask myself: Where am I headed spiritually? Do I need to allow God to direct my life? Do I need to listen more? Do I need to learn more about God's word? Do I need to be more responsive in my dealings with others? Do I need to serve more?
Lent reminds us to pay attention. We won't figure out the answers to all our questions, but at least we can change direction if we need to. All we have to do is wake up and follow where God is leading us.
Beverly Kinego (Virginia, USA)

O God, help us to assess where we are, to be sure we're on your path. And if we need to change direction, give us courage to do it. Amen.

Thought for the Day
Where do I need to change direction?

Enjoy!
